What we do with your details — and with what's on your computer.
Two different things get called "your data" in this trade, and they're worth separating. There are the few details you give us so we can ring you back, and there is everything on the machine we're fixing. The second one is the one people actually worry about, so it's dealt with first.
The data on your computer
Repairs are carried out in front of you, in your home or office. Nothing is taken away, nothing is sent to a third party and nothing is uploaded anywhere. Your files stay on your machine, in your house.
Some jobs mean your files have to be handled — cloning a drive to a new SSD, moving everything to a new computer, recovering what's on a failing disk. When that happens:
- Your files are copied only to the drive or machine you've asked us to copy them to, or to a drive you've provided.
- Where a working copy has to be made on our own equipment to complete a job, it is deleted once you've confirmed the work is finished, and within seven days at the latest.
- We don't open, read, search or copy your personal files for any purpose other than the job you've asked for.
- We don't keep passwords after a job. If you've given us one, change it afterwards if you'd prefer — that's sensible practice with any engineer.
- If we come across material that is obviously illegal, we are obliged to report it. That is the one exception to everything above, and it is the law rather than our policy.
The details you give us
When you call, text or use the enquiry form, we collect your name, phone number, email address, the town or postcode you're in, and whatever you tell us about the fault. That's all, and all of it is information you've chosen to give us.
We use it for three things, and nothing else:
- To answer you and arrange a visit. The lawful basis is that we're taking steps at your request before entering into a contract, and performing it afterwards.
- To keep a record of work done — what was wrong, what was replaced, what you paid. The lawful basis is our legitimate interest in being able to honour a guarantee and answer a query about a past job, and our legal obligation to keep business records.
- To invoice you and keep accounts, which HMRC requires us to retain for six years.
We never sell, rent or share your details for marketing, by anyone, including us. You will not be added to a mailing list. If you ask us a question and decide not to book, you will not hear from us again.
Who else can see it
As few people as possible. The website is served by Cloudflare, enquiry forms are delivered by an email provider, and email is held by Google Workspace. Those companies process the message in order to deliver it, under their own data protection terms; none of them is given your details for any purpose of their own. Our accountant sees invoices, as accountants must. Nobody else sees anything.
How long we keep it
- An enquiry that didn't become a job — deleted within 12 months.
- A job record — kept while the guarantee runs and for a reasonable period after, so we can look up what was done.
- Invoices and accounts — six years, because HMRC requires it.
- Copies of your files — see above. Days, not months, and only when a job required one.
Cookies
This site sets no cookies and carries no advertising trackers, which is why you weren't shown a consent banner. Nothing on these pages follows you anywhere else.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to our holding it. Ask and it's done — there's no form and no charge, and we'll respond within one month. The only things we can't delete on request are invoices, which we're required by law to retain.
If you think we've handled your data badly, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
